Ramaphosa hides as Covid-19 spreads uncontrollably

Read articles in New York Times, Washington Post, The Guardian, etc about the pandemic in US "epicentre [sic]" - to use South African government's confused term - Arizona, Florida,etc that are experiencing surges.

Replace "Arizona" and "Florida" for "South Africa" and the stories could be about SA word for word: lockdown too late, reopen too soon, lack of testing, delays in processing results, lack of a coherent strategy, political confusion, lack of leadership, president in hiding or abdicated responsibilities overwhelmed hospitals, etc. This is not an exaggeration.

Ramaphosa, who has no stomach and aptitude for leadership, and his band of cabinet jesters is going to do to the nation what Mbeki failed to do to HIV/AIDS sufferers only:

Through incompetence and neglect guarantee a significant section of the population get Covid-19 and die. That's not an exaggeration either.

Covid-19 is spreading uncontrollably through the country. To a large extent it could've been limited.

But where's the outrage at his and government's failures? Instead silence from opposite ends - media and analyst Ramaphorias and far-right lobby groups, business and media groups that wanted, and got, an end to the lockdown and for SA to get discredited herd immunity.

Did Beth Engelbrecht jump or was she pushed from a burning platform?

Beth Engelbrecht was head of Western Cape Health Department (WCHD) from 2014 to 2020. Her predecessor Craig Househam ran the department from the late 90s. She was succeeded by Keith Cloete from 1 April 2020.  Engelbrecht's departure was a quiet affair. There was a press briefing January 2020 where Cloete was introduced as her successor (at the Western Cape Government's request, she remained to assist him with the COVID pandemic) but no articles in mainstream media about her tenure. The briefing concentrated on Cloete's and department's priorities.  The absence of press coverage was odd because she held a very important post. Compare that to the fulsome articles when Groote Schuur Hospital CEO Bhavna Patel retired in 2024 and about Eastern Cape health head Rolene Wagner's suspension and reinstatement. Groote Schuur Hospital, Western Cape Health Department and NPA cover up death of patient Groote Schuur Hospital's CEO Dr Bhavna Patel retired after 13 years. A public health specialist, she's credited with improvements to the hospital. That may be true. But there's a cold, cynical side to Patel that the fulsome news reports (IOL, News24) do not speak about.
